PNW Opportunities Grow on Grains — and Bakken Shale
COMMENT FROM BRUCE ABBE OF MIDWEST SHIPPERS ASSOCIATION: Dear Sirs: We appreciate the opportunity to offer our insights from the Midwest Shippers Association on the needs of Upper Midwest grain shippers, in JOC’s recent feature – “A New Pipeline to the PNW – PNW Opportunities Grow on Grains – and Bakken Shale”, June 5, 2013 issue. The PNW ports and logistics service providers are vital to our grain and oilseed exporters in the northern inland region. Our members include both exporter shippers of identity preserved grains, oilseeds and ingredients best shipped from the source in containers; as well as larger volume commodity exporters that can and do transload at the ports as well as inland. One important point of clarification – -The relatively new and growing intermodal rail container shipping facility in Minot, North Dakota is privately-owned, developed and operated by North Dakota Port Services. There is no “port of Minot” taking over operation from a private contractor. NDPS (ndportservice.com) has always been and continues to be in charge of its own extensive operations, and NDPS actually owns what’s called the Port of North Dakota. NDPS is undergoing expansion of its physical operations; and is now expanding its intermodal service arrangements to be better able to serve additional carriers and logistics providers. We encourage the container shipping industry to look at opportunities to serve both the growing inbound and outbound container shipping markets from this promising facility, located in the heart of the rapidly growing Bakken oil shale region. Bruce Abbe Executive Director, Midwest Shippers Association
