NYK Issues Its 2012 CSR Report
NYK has issued the English edition of its 2012 CSR report.
CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is at the very foundation of the achievement of NYK’s global growth strategy. In fact, NYK differentiates its service from others by combining traditional shipping with the value-added strategies contained in its “More Than Shipping 2013’’ medium-term management plan. In particular, the company remains aware of its top priorities — i.e., maintaining safety and caring for the environment — and uses the CSR report to provide details on the company’s activities for achieving sustainable societies through monohakobi (transport).*
The two special features in this year’s edition spotlight the topics of two strategies contained in the company’s medium-term management plan: (1) automobile logistics and (2) human resources for seafarers. The feature on automobile logistics highlights NYK’s efforts to simultaneously address the growth of automobile logistics that require satisfying customers’ requirements while making use of technology to reduce environmental loads. The special feature on human resources for seafarers examines integrated systems for seafarer education and ship management through the establishment of NYK’s own merchant marine academy and a ship-management company in the Philippines, both of which contribute to local communities by offering new education and job opportunities.
The stakeholder dialogue in this year’s report features the president of a disaster relief volunteer center and other experts speaking about the dispatch of NYK volunteers to the area devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The report also newly adopts the seven core subjects (organizational governance, human rights, labor practices, the environment, fair operating practices, consumer issues, and community involvement and development) articulated in ISO 26000, an international standard for CSR issued in November 2010, as a guideline and relates NYK’s CSR activities around these subjects.
The report can be accessed through the web link below.

NYK, as a good corporate citizen, will continue to take an active role in social issues, including the conservation of the environment, to contribute to the achievement of a better global society.
*Monohakobi: The goal of our business activities is to create a comprehensive logistics group that is a world leader in the provision of global marine, land, and air services. We call this monohakobi.
