Change is the rule of the day in the maritime industry, particularly in the Jones Act trade. Companies, including TOTE, are paving the way for a new era in shipping defined by cleaner and safer fuel alternatives. TOTE is moving forward with our new groundbreaking liquefied natural gas-powered Marlin-class vessels that will serve Puerto Rico as well as finalizing the plans for the conversion to LNG of our Orca-class vessels that serve the state of Alaska.
The use of clean-burning LNG will bring about innovations in the global maritime industry while significantly reducing air emissions and the industry’s impact on the environment. Vessel operators, such as TOTE, and industry regulators are working closely together as operational and safety protocols are developed to ensure the transition to LNG is smooth. This process continues to highlight our industry’s continuing commitment to safety, the environment and innovation.
After years of planning, the first LNG powered Marlin-class container vessel, being constructed at NASSCO in San Diego, is set enter service in October 2015. This will herald a new era in shipping and set new standards for environmental stewardship, safety and customer service. The Jones Act trade provides the ideal arena for this investment and is, once again, proving that American workers and U.S. businesses are poised to support technological advancements that will undoubtedly benefit the global maritime sector.
Our commitment to the environment is further demonstrated by the conversion of our Orca class to LNG fuel. These vessels have an admirable service record over the past 10 years that will only be further enhanced by the use of clean-burning LNG.
As we look to the future, we are proud of our record of innovation and the leadership that the Jones Act trade is exhibiting.
