Canada’s port authorities showed strong growth in 2010-2011 with several ports handling record volumes. Three port authorities reported record cruise passenger numbers in eastern Canada, and several set records in container handling.
The proximity of Canadian ports to major markets in North America and their strong intermodal connections make the ports strong competitors in a free market economy dependent on trade.
They will continue to be fierce competitors in the year ahead as Canada continues to sign free trade agreements with countries around the world.
