In 2009, technology solution providers will continue to introduce increasingly customized applications on top of their existing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) products to enable shippers and logistics service providers to improve their ocean shipment management processes.

The SaaS model is mature, with thousands of shippers and service providers using Internet-based computer technology to adopt shipment management solutions quickly and cost effectively. At the same time, the volatile economic environment and increasing international trade regulations are forcing companies to look for new ways to lower costs, improve supply-chain visibility and stay competitive. Technology solution providers will develop new products to address these needs and allow carriers and non-vessel-operating common carriers to develop their own applications on top of existing SaaS products.

Global trade management systems based on flexible service-oriented architecture allow companies to develop new applications quickly and integrate systems more easily. Solution providers can collaborate with shippers, logistics service providers and carriers to rapidly develop new products that address new regulations and changes in the marketplace.

As a result, shippers and service providers will benefit by having products tailored to their specific needs and allow them to be more agile in the changing market environment. At the same time, carriers and NVOs will be able to continue to provide cost-effective products for their customers that differentiate themselves from their competitors and allow them to provide enhanced services for their customers.

2009 will be a year of opportunity for companies in our industry to build and adopt new, highly customized and cost-effective services to help them pull through a volatile economic environment.
