Having handled record volumes in fiscal year 2018, the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) is working to finalize major infrastructure projects that will enhance our operating efficiency and assimilate anticipated Southeast regional growth.
We are increasing capacity at our Wando Terminal by 700,000 TEU through the densification of the terminal and the addition of new container cranes and RTGs. By 2020, Wando Terminal will have 15 container cranes with 47 meters (155 feet) of lift height, enabling the simultaneous handling of three 14,000-TEU container ships with berth productivity of over 150 containers each.
We are on track to have the deepest harbor on the US East Coast by 2021 at 52 feet of depth, thanks to continued funding of the project by the Army Corps of Engineers. The next step in the project is the widening of the Wando Turning Basin to 1,650 feet. And we will begin building the superstructure for Phase 1 of the Leatherman Container Terminal, which will add an additional 700,000 TEU of capacity by 2021 with an additional berth.
Our innovative inland port network continues its growth with the realization of our second inland port on the North Carolina border in Dillon, South Carolina, to complement the very successful inland port in Greer. Rail container volumes handled via our port comprise about 22 percent of overall volume and will continue to grow.
The SCPA and the state are investing more than $2 billion in its port system to assure unprecedented levels of operating efficiency and a strong partnership in the global supply chains of our customers. The main asset of the port is the dedicated team of professionals in the maritime industry in South Carolina who work to provide great service every day.
