The completion of Panama Canal expansion in 2016 will be a game changer in the port industry. The expansion represents a new era in mega-ships, an even larger fleet of cargo ships that can carry up to 13,000 to 14,000 TEUs, nearly three times as many containers as the ships currently transiting the canal.
Seaports are part of an industry largely dependent on fast reliable service for the delivery of time-sensitive shipments. Those ports that want to stay competitive in the new big-ship era need to make adjustments. Ships will continue to get bigger, cranes that service the mega-ships will need to have more lift capacity and outreach, and harbors will need to have the required depth to accommodate deeper drafts.
