2014 proved once more that the industry must endure multiple challenges, both natural and man-made, including insufficient and aging infrastructure, recurrent shortages of equipment and truck power, and unsettled labor relations. These factors often have a snowball effect, expanding from vessels, to ports, to rail and truck transport, and eventually to customers.

I believe that when the industry struggles to overcome these effects, resources are stretched to extremes and recovery time can be lengthy, particularly when faced with unexpected disruptions. Hence, the status quo is not an option.

I believe the industry must engage in a serious and inclusive dialogue — ocean and rail carriers, truckers, terminal operators, port authorities and waterfront labor organizations. The industry must embrace a strategy that is based upon stronger and more consistent business relationships and more efficient processes, and always focus on improvement of the “end-to-end” service our industry provides. Our customers are looking forward to our leadership.
