While 2009 may be a challenging year for the shipping industry, we know that tough times don’t last. And as the industry is weathering this economic storm, seaports must look ahead and prepare to meet the demands of the future.

Cargo volumes will rebound, and when they do, we can’t be caught off guard. As a port authority, that means continuing to move forward with vital infrastructure projects that will position the industry for success in the coming years and decades.

Seaports have recognized that we can’t grow without the support of the communities in which we operate. And that has meant undertaking major changes to improve air quality and the environment. In the past few years, some ports have been aggressive on the environmental front, and that has positioned them well for the future.

In 2009, some major infrastructure investments will move forward that will help ensure the future of the shipping industry. By building “green,” we can improve the environment, create jobs and support the economy at the same time.

Through environmentally friendly infrastructure development, we can ensure that seaports continue to be powerful economic engines in their regional, national and global communities.
