2011 Washington Freight Transportation Policy Forum March 28-29, 2011 Arlington, VA
LEAGUE’S POLICY FORUM TO FEATURE TOP LEADERS
The League is proud to announce its program for the 2011 Washington Freight Transportation Policy Forum which will be held March 28-29, 2011 at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, VA.
This annual gathering has become a traditional event for freight transportation professionals to understand and take advantage of the latest policy initiatives which impact their responsibilities. Leaders from government and industry will be on-hand to share their insights into the next steps that are likely to unfold. Last year, for example, we were fortunate to have with us the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Congressman Jim Oberstar, Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
This year‘s program produced again in conjunction with The Journal of Commerce will examine whether meaningful legislative changes can be enacted as part of a new multi-year surface transportation bill. For example, will new funding mechanisms be found and put into place to pay for needed infrastructure improvements in this new Congress? Or will fiscal austerity doom the chances for approving a new bill? Panels from both government and industry will explore these critical issues.
Next our program will examine the new costs and productivity initiatives affecting freight transportation. The new Hours of Service rules and CSA in trucking; emission controls and slow-speed steaming on the ocean; positive train controls and new security initiatives for air cargo are all designed to enhance safety and the environment but come with significant financial costs and impacts to productivity. Our panel will address these initiatives and how they see them affecting the industry.
Finally we will hear from the leaders of the U.S. Surface Transportation Board and the Federal Maritime Commission on their plans for what‘s ahead.
Invited as keynote speakers for our event are the new Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Rep. John Mica (R-FL) and the Assistant Secretary for Transportation at the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Honorable Polly Trottenberg.
The Forum will follow the meeting of the League‘s Railroad and Highway Transportation Committees which takes place on Monday, March 28. Following the Forum on March 30 is a scheduled meeting of the League‘s Board of Directors.
