APM Terminals Announced Winner of Safety Award
Safety at Sea International names APM Terminals' Safety Culture initiative as winner of the annual industry-wide safety award in the category of Management/Operations.
London, UK - APM Terminals was named the winner of the Safety at Sea International (SASI) Award in the category of Management and Operations for 2010 at the Awards Dinner held on the HMS Belfast in London on Tuesday, June 22nd. The award, which is presented annually, recognized the APM Terminals' company-wide Safety Culture program as an initiative that demonstrates improved safe working practices or attitudes as a result of its implementation, either onshore or aboard-ship.
We have worked very hard as a company to continuously improve safety performance as one of the essential components of our sustainable business model, and we are very proud to have received this prestigious award recognizing the success of those efforts by International Safety at Sea International said APM Terminals Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment Henrik Kristensen.
In 2009, APM Terminals conducted a comprehensive company-wide training program provided in 12 languages to introduce a Safety Culture and uniform adoption of Safety Best-Practice procedures into the daily operations of the 50 terminals and ports and 17,000 personnel in 34 countries and five continents who make up the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network. The goal of the program was to instill a sense of personal responsibility for safety in the workplace (and elsewhere) on the part of every employee, from the top down, and in doing so eliminate the risk of injury and accidents due to unsafe attitudes, procedures and circumstances.
The acceptance and adoption of Safety Culture throughout the company resulted in a 43% reduction in 2009 of the overall Lost-Time Injury (LTI) rate, measured per million man-hours worked, to 4.1 from the 7.15 LTIF rate recorded the year prior in 2008. The Awards presentation was organized by IHS/Fairplay, the well-known shipping industry news, data and analysis provider. APM Terminals was selected from among three other finalists in the Management/Operations category, one of five in which the annual awards are presented.
We can still improve and learn from others; our focus on Safety never stops- it needs constant attention and is everyone's responsibility said Kristensen.
