The 2009 Safety Award is announced in Morocco by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and New Technologies and Ministry of Labour and Professional Training

Rabat, Morocco – APM Terminals Tangier was announced the winner of the 6th Edition of the national “Safety at Work” Award for 2009 in a ceremony in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, presided over by the Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, Ahmed Reda Chami. The facility won in the largest of the three categories of entries in the competition.

“We are very proud to receive this special recognition of our safety program” said APM Tangier Terminal’s Managing Director Etienne Rocher, adding “For us, the safety improvement process is an on-going part of our daily operations”.

APM Terminal Tangier, which opened in the newly constructed Tanger-Med port in August of 2007 with an annual capacity of 1.8 million TEUs has rapidly emerged as an important transhipment hub on the Straits of Gibraltar.

Noted APM Terminals’ Head of Health, Safety, Security and Environment, Henrik Kristensen in The Hague, “This is a great distinction that our colleagues in Morocco have earned, but we must keep in mind that as far as we all are concerned this is just a start- our goal remains zero accidents in the workplace, and the elimination of risk for our employees due to avoidable actions”.

In 2008, APM Terminals launched a “Safety Culture” initiative of advanced safety training and workshops at each of the terminals in the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network, and has seen an impressive decline in Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) rate by 43% to 4.1 for 2009 world-wide, as compared 7.15 at the start of 2008. The initiative aims for zero accidents through a comprehensive safety culture program to foster a safety mindset and targeting of unsafe acts.
