BNSF Receives Working for Clean Air Award
FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 10, 2009—BNSF Railway Company was recognized last week as a Clean Air Champion by the North Texas Clean Air Coalition. The Working for Clean Air™ awards publicly recognize civic-minded businesses that have developed internal corporate programs to improve the quality of air, quality of life, and the health of the north Texas community.
“BNSF is committed to operating in a way that protects the environment, our employees, our communities and the economy overall,” said Mark Schulze, vice president, Training and Operations Support. “I am proud that BNSF has been recognized for its green efforts at our corporate offices.”
This award is a result of BNSF’s work in reviewing changes and updating policies to ensure the corporate headquarters’ buildings are meeting or exceeding today’s environmental quality standards. The campus itself was designed to reduce auto use by containing offices, cafeterias, exercise facilities and a store in one place. BNSF also has many other programs in place, such as car pooling, recycling and energy efficiency projects.
“Rail is the most environmentally preferred form of surface transportation and BNSF is a leader,” said Schulze. “We play a key role in our nation’s economy while reducing emissions, saving fuel and relieving highway congestion.”
About BNSF’s Environmental Efforts
In addition to safely and reliably moving freight from one point to another, BNSF is an approachable partner that works hard to build strong relationships. As a leader in environmental stewardship, BNSF can move a ton of freight an average of 470 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel. As the rail industry’s intermodal leader, each BNSF intermodal train can take 280 or more long-haul trucks off the nation’s crowded highways.
