Chapman Freeborn delivers urgent aid to help Sri Lanka flood victims
Chapman Freeborn has successfully completed an urgent humanitarian charter to assist victims of the recent floods in Sri Lanka.
The global aircraft charter specialist carried out the high-profile movement from the Jebel Ali Free Zone in the UAE, to Colombo, Sri Lanka, on behalf of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to a government spokesman more than 325,000 people have been displaced by the floods. Over 30 people have died and more than one million have been affected by the natural disaster. The priority since the rains abated last week has been to deliver humanitarian aid to thousands of people who now face further risk from disease and famine.
Benefiting from their global office network of over 30 offices in 22 countries, Chapman Freeborn’s Dubai team collaborated with the company’s UK head office to plan and operate the movement of the urgent cargo on a DC8-63F full chartered aircraft.
The humanitarian aid was stored at USAID’s holding facility in Jebel Ali Free Zone, UAE. Within 24 hours of final confirmation, Chapman Freeborn Dubai office arranged the full customs clearance and ground transportation for the cargo on five 40 foot trailers from Jebel Ali Free Zone to Fujairah Airport, where an urgent aircraft crew were mobilized and on standby. Chapman Freeborn ground staff also supported with permit applications and managed the aircraft handling, repackaging and palletizing the cargo.
Chapman Freeborn representatives were also on hand in Colombo to receive the cargo and arranged an urgent delivery to USAID.
The cargo, which included 600 rolls of plastic sheeting and 1,000 mosquito nets, reached 6,000 families in the flooded areas of North and East Sri Lanka in attempts to provide shelter and protect them from disease.
So far this year, the US government has provided nearly $1.1 million dollars in emergency assistance in response to this disaster. Chapman Freeborn’s global network has been working together with USAID for over 6 years, supporting their continued efforts in providing foreign aid.
