Coca-Cola Hellenic implements ORTEC’s logistic optimization solutions

JOC Staff |
The beverage corporation Coca-Cola Hellenic based in Athens and with subsidiaries in 28 European countries – ranging from Greece to the Republic of Ireland, from Italy to Romania - optimizes its logistical processes with support from the logistics company ORTEC, thus achieving enormous potential savings.

Coca-Cola Hellenic (CCH), one of the largest bottlers of non-alcoholic beverages in Europe, has already implemented at several locations the ORTEC beverage solutions for Route Planning and Dispatching, Pallet and Loadbuilding as well as for Warehouse Control and Picking. Atanas Atanosov, Shared Services at CCH, explains the decision for ORTEC as follows: “Since ORTEC best-of-breed optimization solutions are available both in a SAP embedded as well as in a non-embedded version, it is possible for CCH to implement the same functionalities uniformly in every country. In addition to excellent functionalities, this standardization of logistics processes represents decisive cost and services advantages for CCH.”

Project to run until 2012 – initial successes already achieved
The starting signal for the Europe-wide project, estimated to run until 2012, sounded as early as 2006 with the joint development of an ORTEC LEO template version. The first operative startup followed in 2007 with the introduction of the non-embedded ORTEC beverage solution (also known as ORTEC Shortrec) in Greece, and soon mirrored by Italy and Switzerland. In 2008, Romania followed, while Croatia is already in the preparation stages for the Go-Live. Furthermore, the SAP embedded ORTEC beverage solution (also known as ORTEC LEO) was installed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2008.

Since the implementation of the ORTEC solutions, CCH profits from more efficient costs structures, time and route optimized processes as well as improved planning quality. A further benefit for CCH comes from secure decision making processes resulting from the ORTEC SAP embedded implementation, which are based on data directly from SAP that is consistent and current in all planning phases. “ORTEC solutions have considerably shortened the time our customers need for planning. Another goal of this project was to cut back on mileage and consequently on driving time per shipment. ORTEC’s software applications have also enabled the achievement of these goals, as well. In view of rising fuel prices the shorter stretches will bring about substantial improvement in Return On Investment,” explains Stefan Huntemann, Managing Partner at ORTEC.

Standardized logistics processes for the entire CCH Group
Strong growth, especially in Eastern Europe, prompted CCH to establish new processes and data standards throughout the entire group. Varying process structures and, as is the case with CCH, distinctly diverse markets come with different prerequisites, place specific demands on the software and call for individual solutions. ORTEC, through years of experience, know-how in the beverage industry and likewise through a product range with SAP embedded solutions, can react with a great deal of flexibility to the demands of CCH.

Tapping into the full potential of existing optimization possibilities
Using order-, customer- and vehicle specific restrictions of the respective orders, ORTEC Shortrec determines the ideal routes. The calculation is based mainly on order and vehicle data, information pertaining to loading stations, vehicle costs and transport tariffs, as well as working, driving and resting times of the drivers. The result is a route plan in tabular or cartographic form, tailored to the CCH fleet, which also includes among other things information about route kilometers, transport- and planning costs, as well as the possible delivery times. In the course of the route planning, different delivery variations are considered, such as single or multi day planning, return transports, third party businesses or two-step cross-docking transports.

Next to ORTEC Shortrec CCH also implemented the SAP embedded version ORTEC LEO, with its modules for pallet optimization, load space optimization and route planning as along with ORTEC MLS, a warehouse control and picking system. All modules of the SAP-embedded version directly utilize data of the SAP ERP system and do not require interfaces.
