Con-way Inc. Names 2011 CEO Constellation Award Recipients Five Exemplary Employees Honored with Company’s Highest Recognition
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — June 14, 2011 — Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) today announced that it has honored five outstanding employees with its fifth annual CEO Constellation Awards. Winners were selected from throughout the enterprise as those who best exemplify the company’s core values of integrity, commitment and excellence.
“The talent, teamwork and integrity of our employees form the foundation of Con-way’s success. It is with great pleasure that I personally recognize these five employees, who through their own examples of living our values every day, have demonstrated exemplary leadership and performance,” said Douglas W. Stotlar, Con-way’s president and CEO. “This year’s recipients provide inspiration for us. They represent the best of the best at Con-way and we extend our congratulations to each of them.”
The CEO Constellation Award is the highest employee recognition bestowed by the company each year. The five winners were chosen by an executive team that included Con-way CEO Stotlar, Menlo Worldwide Logistics President Bob Bianco, Con-way Truckload President Herb Schmidt, Con-way Executive Vice President and CFO Steve Bruffett, and Leslie Lundberg, Con-way’s senior vice president of human resources. The five winners were chosen from 10 finalists. The finalists were drawn from a group of 21 President’s Award winners, who were selected from 260 Quarterly Leader Award (QLA) recipients in 2010. Constellation Award winners each receive a sculptured crystal vase inscribed with their name, a monetary prize and a lifetime of recognition within the company. They are also attending a special recognition event this month which will include an executive retreat with Stotlar and other members of the Con-way executive team.
Con-way’s 2011 CEO Constellation Award winners:
Christopher P. Anderson, driver sales representative, Con-way Freight, Brooklyn, N.Y.: Anderson joined Con-way Freight in 2005 and has since been nominated for and won a QLA every quarter. He is known for his investment in boosting morale, engaging his coworkers and reinforcing safe, accident- and injury-free driving. Anderson is the leader of the service center’s Vision and Values Team and his work is credited with helping the service center achieve significantly higher ratings in periodic surveys to measure employee satisfaction. Influential, determined and motivated are terms consistently used to describe him.
Alysa J. Arndt, senior solutions engineer, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, Aurora, Ill.: Arndt is deemed a leader and devoted lean expert within the organization and is known for living out lean principles every day, while guiding others as they learn to do the same. She is motivated and recognized often for her strong customer and coworker relationships, which are built on trust, professionalism and reliability “to get the job done.” Her positive outlook, infectious energy and lean skills drive knowledge and morale internally and create hard cost savings for her customers. Arndt is known for going above and beyond her job responsibilities to contribute to the overall success of her team.
Jeffery M. Hill, service center manager, Con-way Freight, Eagan, Minn.: Hill has built a successful career at Con-way Freight and is credited for his ability to build teams focused on being and doing their best. He began working for the company in 2005 and has since taken on tough assignments with the utmost professionalism and success. He is well-respected by his employees and peers and, through his leadership and positive attitude, has driven outstanding safety and compliance results. Through his mentorship and care, Hill has made a difference in employee morale and performance, and colleagues say he is exactly what the CEO Constellation award signifies.
Gretchen L. Jackson, manager of recruiting, Con-way Truckload, Joplin, Mo.: Jackson has been with Con-way Freight for more than two decades, rising up through the ranks from her role as file clerk to become manager of recruiting. Colleagues describe her as real, honest, fair and a great asset to the company. She does not sacrifice quantity of drivers for quality in her recruitment efforts as safety is paramount to the company and inextricably tied to its success. Jackson is considered a role model for the employees in her department and consistently strives for excellence in every project she takes on — those both within and outside of her defined job description.
Tony L. Vigil, driver sales representative, Con-way Freight, Albuquerque, N.M.: For more than 10 years, Vigil has consistently demonstrated his dedication to the company’s values of safety, integrity, commitment and excellence. A “true leader,” his actions center on a willingness to help others and a positive attitude that is inspiring to his colleagues and managers. His actions are said to “start and end with safety” and he is invested in helping other drivers achieve stellar performance records. Vigil has personally contributed to process improvements in dock operations and has volunteered to serve as a subject matter expert for the company’s new SafeStack cargo loading system.
