Eugene Schreiber to Receive Bertel Award at July 22 Luncheon
On Thursday, July 22, eleven Louisiana-based trade, transportation and other organizations are sponsoring the annual C. Alvin Bertel Award luncheon program at 12:00 noon at the Westin Canal Place Hotel honoring Eugene Schreiber for his outstanding contributions to the Greater New Orleans port area. Gene Schreiber has served since 1979 as Managing Director of the WTC, a nonprofit organization of 1,400 corporate and individual members that is dedicated to the advancement of New Orleans and Louisiana's international trade, port activity, and economic development. Established in 1943, the WTC was the first of what are now more than 300 World Trade Center organizations in nearly 100 countries. WTC New Orleans is active in a wide range of international trade seminars, conferences, country briefings, trade missions, legislative affairs, trade publications and other trade promotion programs. |
During the past 30 years the WTC has organized under Mr. Schreiber’s direction over 1,500 international trade events. In recognition of its efforts, the WTC has received the President’s “E” and “E-Star” Awards for outstanding contributions to the expansion of United States exports. Mr. Schreiber also serves on a number of other boards, including as Chairman of the Louisiana Tax Free Shopping Commission since its inception in 1988 and as a member of the Louisiana Export Council. He is a frequent speaker at international trade seminars and training courses. Prior to joining the WTC, Mr. Schreiber worked for 15 years in international trade and investment development as a Foreign Service Officer of the U.S. Department of State and as an Associate with Booz-Allen and Hamilton management consultants. His overseas assignments included U.S. Embassy positions in Bolivia, Uganda, Brazil and Guatemala. He also served in Tanzania as a member of the United States' first contingent of Peace Corps Volunteers sent abroad in 1961. A native of St. Louis, Mr. Schreiber received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and his law degree from George Washington University. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The organizations comprising the Bertel Award Selection Committee are the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans; the City of New Orleans; the International Freight Forwarders and Customs House Brokers Association, the Gulf States Maritime Association, Jefferson Parish, the New Orleans Board of Trade, the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, the Plaquemines Port, Harbor and Terminal District, the Port of South Louisiana, the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District and the World Trade Center of New Orleans. Founded in 1943 as a not-for-profit membership organization, the World Trade Center of New Orleans was the first of what are today 309 WTCs in 88 countries that service more than one million businesses engaged in international commerce. WTC New Orleans' mission is to add wealth and jobs in New Orleans and Louisiana through international trade, port development, and allied activities. The WTC conducts international trade education, training, and networking programs and provides trade information and other services for its more than 1,600 members and Louisiana's business community at large.
