Giant container carrier visits port of Antwerp once more

Antwerp, 3 February 2012 – The port of Antwerp is getting ready once more for the arrival of the largest container carriers in the world. Just under three weeks since the successful call by the Edith Maersk, the Maersk shipping company is sending a sister ship, the m/v Eleonora Maersk, to Antwerp. With a LOA of nearly 400 m and a capacity of 15,500 TEU, the ship is due to unload 3,700 TEU in the Deurganck dock on Saturday.

The Port Authority is particularly pleased about this new call: “The arrival of the Eleonora Maersk demonstrates that the shipping company is satisfied with the success of the first call at Antwerp by such a vessel, and that our port is perfectly accessible to even the largest container carriers in the world, despite its location deep inland,” declared Port Authority president Marc Van Peel. “Since the deepening of the Scheldt, the number of calls by Ultra-Large Container Carriers has increased considerably, demonstrating that the large shipping companies have full confidence in our port.”

The m/v Eleonora Maersk is expected on Saturday 4 February at around 0100 hours at the PSA terminal in the Deurganck dock on the left bank of the Scheldt, arriving directly from Port Said. After unloading it will depart the same day at around 2200 for Bremerhaven.
