Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd wins ‘Port Operator of the year’ for Health, Safety and Quality

Mumbai September 17, 2013: APM Terminals operated Gujarat Pipavav Port (APM Terminals Pipavav), one of Western India’s fastest growing gateway ports won the “Port Operator of the year’ for maintaining highest standards of Health, Safety and Quality” by – The Maritime and Logistics Award (MALA) organized by EXIM India.

Safety Measures

At APM Terminals Pipavav over 80 persons receive initial and refresher safety training every day. Safety training is imparted to all persons entering the operational area – this includes employees, suppliers, contractors and Sub contractor’s.

As a proactive terminal, APM Terminals Pipavav prepares diligently for emergencies – regular safety drills are practiced to the extent that emergency response is second nature at Pipavav. The port has two state - of - the - art ICU ambulances on standby and a fully equipped fire fighting department.

Health Facilities

At APM Terminals Pipavav, employee health is a key performance indicator – a healthy employee is an alert employee and a safe employee. An onsite clinic with resident doctors attends to the employee needs on minor health issues and first aid, while 2 ambulances are on standby 24X7 for any emergencies. Annual health checkups and the best insurance cover for our employees, ensure nothing is left to chance.

APM Terminals Pipavav supports the local community by offering free medical assistance at the Ports Medical Centre.

Environment Protection

APM Terminals Pipavav fully complies with State and National rules governing coastal areas and have helped plant over 21,000 tree saplings. Our target is to have 33% of the port area under green cover. APM Terminals Pipavav has completed plantation of 500 hectares of Mangroves in Bharuch and Surat districts as part of our commitment to the environment in association with the Gujarat Ecology Commission.

A rain water harvesting system has been set up to harvest 15 million litres of water a year which supplements the ports requirement for freshwater from other sources.

Waste management is practiced diligently – sewage from the operational and residential quarters is recycled vide an in-house sewage treatment plant. Solid waste is segregated, processed and disposed of through authorized recyclers.
