Holland & Knight NYC Partner Jim Hohenstein, Appointed National Maritime Practice Group Leader

New York City, NY – April 16, 2010 – Holland & Knight Managing Partner, Steven Sonberg is please to announce the appointment of New York City Partner, Jim Hohenstein as national Maritime Practice Group Leader. The firm's Maritime practice is a part of the broader Transportation practice which is one of the largest in the country. Hohenstein is a partner in the firm's New York City office.

I am pleased that Jim has accepted my request to lead the firm's national Maritime practice. said Sonberg, The breadth and depth of both his broad legal experience and distinguished military career will be a tremendous asset as Jim takes on this new role for the Maritime practice.

Preceding Hohenstein as Practice Group Leader is Bill Honan who currently serves as the New York office's Executive Partner and is also a Partner in the Maritime practice. Bill was a wonderful leader of the Maritime practice and I am delighted that he continues to serve as Executive Partner in the New York office, Sonberg continued.

Hohenstein's practice focuses primarily in the areas of international and domestic commercial litigation, including charter parties, cargo damage actions, maritime liens, maritime bankruptcies and workouts, as well as marine casualty and insurance issues. He has participated in a wide variety of arbitrations and litigations involving such matters, both in the U.S. and abroad, and has appeared in numerous actions in New York, as well as other maritime jurisdictions in the United States. He has extensive trial experience in commercial and maritime cases, including bankruptcy actions as well as litigations involving submerged utility assets.

Hohenstein has also had a distinguished naval career, commencing his service as a surface line officer, during which time he qualified as an officer of the deck as well as an engineering officer of the watch. He subsequently was selected for the Navy's law school education program while on active duty and then commenced a period of service as a member of the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps. During his service as a member of the active duty JAG Corps, Hohenstein was assigned to the Navy's Admiralty Division at its headquarters in Washington, where his ultimate assignment was as Assistant Admiralty Counsel of the Navy. While serving in the naval reserve, Hohenstein was the Commanding Officer of the Navy's Admiralty Law Unit. In May 2007, Hohenstein retired from the Navy, having achieved the rank of Captain.

Hohenstein holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Chicago.
