IT Sector Specialization Crucial to Menlo’s Service Growth

JOC Staff |
SAN MATEO, Calif., and AMSTERDAM – Nov. 15, 2010 – Menlo Worldwide Logistics, the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), announced that Blue Coat Systems, Inc. is working with Menlo in Europe to provide more efficient service for customers in EMEA and Asia Pacific. The services are based primarily in Menlo’s Rotterdam facility and range from quality control of inbound ‘raw material’ through software loading to individualized kitting, cabling, documentation and distribution to the end-user.

Blue Coat is the technology leader of application delivery networking with solutions that make networks faster and safer. Blue Coat has partnered with Menlo at Menlo’s Rotterdam facility to serve customers for almost two years.

At its Rotterdam site, Menlo uses its transport management services (TMS) for the outbound distribution of finished Blue Coat products and marries these services with a sub-assembly production line. One area of Menlo’s technical expertise is the loading of software onto the hardware platforms.

Menlo also undertakes kitting and cabling for Blue Coat appliances to meet the requirements of individual customers and channel partners in various countries. Export and customs documentation is completed relevant to the ultimate delivery destination and carrier management is provided to ensure cost-effective transport throughout Blue Coat’s market regions.

For Blue Coat, Menlo serves as a logistics operator with manufacturing assembly capabilities and high-tech/IT experience, combining the provision of logistics skills and light manufacturing capability into a single, efficient service package. Blue Coat’s Mary Emerton comments, “A key to building an efficient and flexible global supply chain is to work with outsourced suppliers that have IT expertise and can understand our business. Menlo helps us support important business objectives.”

Tony Gunn is Menlo’s managing director in Europe. He emphasizes his company’s ability to view the supply chain in its entirety and formulate solutions that combine a number of functions within that chain. “The term ‘integrated supply chain solution’ is much over-used by service providers in the logistics sector to describe the service they aspire to deliver. But I feel that our work for Blue Coat exemplifies the true meaning of this phrase, providing, as it does, a multi-faceted way of resolving the customer’s particular requirements for delivery of its products to market.”
