ITI Board of Directors Elects Two New Members
DENVER — At its recently concluded spring board meeting, the Board of Directors of the Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI) at the University of Denver elected two new members. Elected to three-year terms were J. Burton (Burt) Wallace, President of Corporate Transportation for UPS, and Steve H. Townsend, President and Chief Executive Officer for Keolis America, Inc. The ITI Board is particularly pleased to welcome another passenger-related company, Keolis America, to board membership. In addition, UPS was a founding member of the ITI Board of Directors in 1997, and the ITI Board is very pleased that UPS is again represented on the ITI Board.
Mr. Wallace began his career at UPS as a part-time package handler in 1980. He has since held many senior-level positions throughout his career at the company. His current responsibilities consist of the oversight of the UPS Global Transportation Network, which includes: Hub and Feeder Operations, Railroad Intermodal Activity, Air Gateway Operations, Network Planning, and Transportation Technology. UPS is a $49.5B corporation, focused on the goal of enabling commerce around the globe. It is the world’s largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services. In addition, Wallace sits on the Board of the Northwestern Business Advisory Committee. He is a graduate of Leadership Louisville and served on the Board of Directors for Dare to Care, a nonprofit agency dedicated to fighting hunger in Louisville, Kentucky. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Maryland.
Mr. Townsend has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Keolis America, Inc., the US subsidiary of the Keolis Group, since 2007. Under his leadership, Keolis has successfully expanded into the commuter rail and the transit markets in the US by winning the contract to operate and maintain the Virginia Railway Express commuter rail service and completing the acquisition of Tectrans, Inc., now Keolis Transit America, which provides a variety of transportation solutions in California, Florida, and Virginia. As CEO, Townsend is responsible for the development and management of Keolis SA’s US passenger transportation activities. Previously, he spent much of his career in management positions, including positions with various oil, energy, and transportation companies. This included six years with Koch Industries, LPG Division; and a stint with Dravo Corporation of Pittsburgh, where he held progressive management positions, leading to general manager of its operating company. He also spent 18 years with Veolia Environment/Transportation in executive positions, such as Executive Vice President-Operations and Chief Operating Officer – Transit Division. Townsend graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1972.
“We are incredibly pleased to have both Steve and Burt join the ITI Board. We will benefit greatly from their knowledge, experience, and leadership capabilities - as well as the further enhancement of the Board’s representation in both passenger and global logistics expertise,” said Adriene B. Bailey, Vice President, Strategic Business Development for Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc., and Chair of the ITI Board of Directors. “The ITI Board is a group of senior leaders in the intermodal transportation industry who generously offer their service to this organization. The 360-degree view our Board members bring to the intermodal freight and passenger network in North America enables us to support the ITI’s mission to educate and influence integrated intermodal thinking into the overall network design and investment strategy for our transportation networks.”
