Japanese Ministry Honors NYK for Its Relief Efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has recognized NYK for the community support and assistance the NYK Group has provided in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. At a ceremony held at the ministry on July 27, NYK corporate officer Yoko Wasaki was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Minister Yuichiro Hata.

Since the quake occurred, the NYK Group has remained active in its support of the affected areas. Among the group’s many activities, its Yamatai module carrier was used for free transportation of relief supplies in cooperation with the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations, aid from overseas countries was transported to Japan for free, refrigerated containers were supplied for the quick recovery of the fisheries industry along the Tohoku shore, and volunteers that include NYK executives and staff members have been sent to the area.   • About 146 tons of relief supplies, including food, baby goods, and sanitary items, were transported for free on Yamatai, a module carrier operated by NYK-Hinode Line Ltd.
  • A total of 113 20-foot containers filled with aid from overseas, including drinking water, food, and materials for temporary housing, were transported to Japan for free.
  • One hundred refrigerated containers for ocean transport were supplied as storage of ice and processed products to support the quick recovery of the fisheries industry along the Tohoku shore.
  • A total of 120 NYK Group executives and staff members have been sent as volunteer support teams to the city of Rikuzentakata in Iwate prefecture.
The NYK Group has used its logistics and transport services, facilities, and networks across oceans, land, and air to demonstrate the group's commitment to social contribution activities and support the affected area by cooperating with local communities.
