Port of Felixstowe Takes Part in Climate Week

The Port of Felixstowe has announced that it will be taking part in Climate Week, between 21st and 27th March.

The national Climate Week event aims to shine a spotlight on the good work already undertaken by communities and workplaces, and renew ambition and confidence in combating climate change.

As part of their Climate Week programme, staff at the port will be entering the Climate Week Challenge with students from a local school on the 21st March. The Challenge encourages teams nationwide to tackle the same task and come up with a creative solution to a climate change issue.

The Port of Felixstowe will also trial a revolutionary electric vehicle as part of its drive to reduce its carbon footprint.

David Gledhill, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd, which owns the Port of Felixstowe, commented:

“There is greater pressure than ever before, upon both businesses and individuals, to look at the way we live our lives and to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Climate Week is an annual reminder for each of us and our workplaces to take a look at our ‘green credentials’ and find ways of improving our commitment to the environment.

He continued:

“These are exciting times for ‘green’ technology, and we are pleased to be one of the first businesses in the area to trial a 100% electric vehicle. We take the effect our operations have on the environment very seriously, and are constantly striving to reduce the impact we cause. This series of events will help us to raise the profile of this as an issue and give our employees greater opportunity to contribute to this change.”

The MaxEV, a 100% Electric Light Commercial Vehicle, was launched in September 2010 by RLE International and Energetique, as a retrofit to a conventional vehicle and has a maximum speed of 130km/h and motor efficiency of up to 97%. Its suitability will be assessed by a number of departments at the UK’s leading container port.
