Port of Seattle Recognized for Efforts to Help Tenants Maintain Environmental Compliance

SEATTLE – The Port of Seattle is one of four ports nationwide to win a 2010 Environmental Improvement Award from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA).

The Port’s Environmental Compliance and Assessment Program (ECAP) was recognized by the Association in the Comprehensive Environmental Management category.

ECAP is a tenant focused program designed to minimize the environmental impacts of tenant activities and maintain regulatory compliance through education and compliance assessment. ECAP is not an enforcement program, rather ECAP team members work collaboratively with tenants to minimize environmental impacts in ways that also work with the tenant’s business objectives.

One of the important considerations of the program is accommodation of tenants with a wide range of environmental and regulatory knowledge. To manage that challenge, ECAP has a flexible system of Environmental Impact Codes which determine the frequency and intensity of tenant assessments.

“We work cooperatively with a wide range of tenants, customers and partners to advance sustainable practices throughout our harbor,” said Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani. “I want to congratulate the Port staff members who developed and administer ECAP, as well as the tenants who participate in the program. The recognition is well deserved.”
