Port Technology Executive Wins Excellence Award
December 8, 2009Doug Albrecht, the Port of Long Beach’s Director of Information Management, has won the 2009 Best of California Award for Leadership in Management of Information Technology from the Center for Digital Government.
The annual award recognizes excellence in digital technology in the public sector. Albrecht was among six winners in the leadership category that also included the Mayor of San Diego Jerry Sanders. It was presented December 3, 2009 in Sacramento.
This award is testimony to the hard work of our staff and the Port’s commitment to technology, said Port Executive Director Richard D. Steinke. Like everything else we do at the Port, the information management division always aims to be on the leading edge of our industry.
The Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology in state and local government, referenced several projects Albrecht has deployed during his last four years managing the Port’s information technology. Under his leadership, the division has implemented several Web-based applications and introduced advanced computer technology to the Port’s Security Command and Control Center, the state-of-the-art headquarters of the Harbor Patrol that also serves as a regional security center for various federal and local agencies.
Albrecht, who has an MBA from Pepperdine University and a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from Baltimore's Towson State University, is a 20-year veteran of the Port. Before joining the Port, he spent 14 years in private industry developing software for the records management and medical claims processing industries.
Best of California Award winners are selected by a panel of state and local government chief information officers/judges based on a set of criteria, including collaboration between agencies, innovative use of technology, energy sustainability, and benefits and improvement of services to citizens and government employees.
