Port of Virginia Names Scoular Company Shipper of the Year

Norfolk – The Scoular Company, a leading user of The Port of Virginia’s barge service to Richmond, is the recipient of the port’s 2015 Shipper of the Year award.


The award recognizes a port user that has gone above and beyond the course of normal business to help the port grow both commercially and operationally. The award was presented May 14, at the Virginia Maritime Association’s annual symposium.


The selection of Scoular, said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, took into account several facts, these among them:


• The company’s commitment to creating new jobs for Virginians; more than 40 new jobs since 2013.
• The utilization of the port’s barge service.
• The organization’s three agricultural container-loading facilities in Virginia, as well as an exclusive export marketing agreement with a Hopewell, Va.-based ethanol facility.


“Scoular’s job creation, its investment in Virginia, its strategic use of both the barge and the Port of Richmond show a real commitment to Virginia and made it the ideal choice for Shipper of the Year,” Reinhart said.


“The Scoular Company is honored to receive this award,” said John Messerich, Scoular’s senior vice president. “Our collaborative partnership with the port has created innovative solutions that are allowing us to make investments in agricultural export container-loading facilities that serve the increasing food and feed demand in Asia.
