Russian Food Distributor Geba Prepares for Business Expansion with Manhattan Associates
ST. PETERSBURG and ATLANTA — January 18, 2010 — Global supply chain optimization provider, Manhattan Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: MANH), today announced that regional food distributor Geba has initiated a project to automate its distribution center (DC) in Novosibirsk in Southern Russia, with Manhattan Associates' logistics execution system, Manhattan SCALE™: Supply Chain Architected for Logistics Execution, providing the technology backbone for its regional fulfilment operation.
From the DC in Novosibirsk—the largest City in Siberia and third largest city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg—Geba distributes food, confectionery and grocery products for a large number of clients including Cadbury's, Kraft, Nestlé, Shtolverk Rus, Stimorol and United Confectioners. Its distribution operations cover the cities of Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Iskitim, Kuibyshev, Karasuk.
The project addresses two main objectives: to provide a high quality distribution service across the region to existing supplier and retail customers; and to attract new customers. To this end, Geba's management team decided to create a common technology platform for its entire distribution operation.
Geba's new 75,000 square foot DC in Novosibirsk is equipped with high-bay shelving storage, a conveyor, and radio-frequency (RF) data collection terminals that will allow Geba to manage workflow in real time. To glue all of this together, Geba needed an advanced warehouse management and logistics execution solution. Thanks to the powerful and flexible functionality of Manhattan SCALE, and based on multiple instances of Manhattan's system operating elsewhere in Russia, Geba opted to partner with Manhattan Associates.
A key component of the contract award involves KORUS Consulting, Manhattan Associates' local partner in Russia and the CIS countries, taking on the lead role in the implementation and support of Manhattan's solution for Geba. Geba was impressed by the approach proposed by Korus Consulting and Manhattan which was to dedicate their expertise in the deployment of core elements of Manhattan SCALE and then enable Geba to configure the system themselves further down the line to meet evolving business needs.
According to a senior project lead at Geba who is responsible for the business expansion initiative, In addition to playing a central and strategic role in the supply chain of our supplier and retail customers, we wanted to streamline that supply chain, particularly in the context of the current economic environment. Without a modern information system however, we could not develop the existing business we have, let alone bring in new business. With the introduction of Manhattan SCALE, we are confident we will have an effective solution for managing the unique challenges of the food supply chain — the ability to monitor product expiration dates, ensure transparency of inventory in the warehouse and beyond, reduce product waste, and meet the particular requirements of buyers and suppliers in the supply, storage and shipment of food products. Our management team also expects to be able improve the performance of the workforce.
According to Jan-Paul Boos, senior director at Manhattan Associates, We look forward to working closely with Geba and to making its supply chain leaner and more agile. The ultimate goal of our work together is to streamline the supply chain that Geba manages on behalf of its clients in the Siberian Federal District and to get products onto retail shelves faster. Manhattan Associates sees this project as a prime demonstration of the use of its .Net based supply chain solution in serving the needs of the food industry and in lowering the cost of ownership for mission critical supply chain systems.
