Saddle Creek Corp. Recognized for Sustainability Initiatives
Lakeland, Fla., Nov. 17, 2011 – Saddle Creek, a nationwide third-party logistics provider, has earned the 2011 Green Supply Chain Award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine. The award recognizes the 3PL’s dedication to making sustainability an integral part of its supply chain strategies.
Supply & Demand Chain Executive selected those nominees that best incorporated significant sustainability objectives into their own supply chains or enabled meaningful sustainability in their customers' supply chains. Award nominations were reviewed based on the clarity and content of sustainability goals and strategy, the extent of the steps being taken, and the impact of the results to date and projected results.
“At Saddle Creek, we’re committed to continually seeking out new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and have made a significant investment in strategic green initiatives,” said Cliff Otto, Saddle Creek president. “That makes this recognition of our efforts especially meaningful.”
Most recently, Saddle Creek invested in 40 Freightliner natural gas trucks for its for-hire fleet and plans to add 40 more in 2012. These vehicles run on compressed natural gas (CNG), one of the cleanest-burning alternative fuel options available with near-zero emissions. The new tractors will reduce the fleet’s carbon footprint by approximately 103,000 pounds per truck each year – the equivalent of planting 85,760 trees.
Saddle Creek has implemented numerous other sustainability initiatives as well. The company’s transportation division is a SmartWay Transportation Partner and has incorporated a number of programs designed to minimize the fleet’s environmental footprint. Saddle Creek also considers the environmental footprint of its new and existing facilities. The company’s distribution center in Harrisburg, N.C. achieved LEED Silver certification in 2009.
