Savi Rolls Out UnwiredPlanet Licensing Program for Wireless Sensor Networking
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – November 17, 2009 – Building on its successful ISO 18000-7 licensing program, Lockheed Martin’s[NYSE: LMT] Savi today announced the launch of UnwiredPlanetTM , its next-generation patent licensing program with reduced pricing and a broader portfolio of wireless sensor networking patents.
UnwiredPlanet supersedes previous Savi licensing programs for DASH7TM (ISO 18000-7) technologies and is aimed at accelerating market adoption for DASH7 outside its initial deployments in the defense sector. Initial licensees already are realizing benefits from DASH7’s growing usage in the marketplace as evidenced by DoD’s recent $429.4 million RFID III contract for DASH7 hardware, and further adoption by non-U.S. allied defense forces.
“As the market for wireless sensor networking matures, we are advancing Savi’s patent licensing program to reflect new market growth and innovation opportunities,” said David Stephens, CEO of Savi Technology. “DASH7 is the most compelling wireless sensor networking technology in the marketplace today and its future extends well beyond its roots in defense supply chains.”
UnwiredPlanet offers DASH7 developers a robust portfolio of Savi patents with reasonable and non-discriminatory (RAND) terms as well as zero upfront fees and a modest per unit royalty. The patents covered under the UnwiredPlanet program include a range of air protocol, low frequency wakeup, sensor networking, and container security patents, many of which are required to practice the DASH7 standard today. Complete details of this program are available under non-disclosure agreement by visiting http://bit.ly/2tzNoz
Developers of DASH7-based products require a license from Savi Technology and can choose from a growing list of third-party developer platforms such as ST Microelectronics’ SmartSensor Hardware Developer’s Toolkit. Platforms under development by other semiconductor manufacturers are expected to be available in the near future. Further, developers who sign up for the UnwiredPlanet licensing program before February 1, 2010 will receive special incentive discounts for the first 100,000 units sold under the program.
DASH7 operates in the globally available 433 MHz spectrum that requires no monthly service charges. DASH7 focuses on traditional applications such as in-transit container tracking, but it also looks beyond these markets at other applications such as tire pressure monitoring, smart grid metering and control, digital advertising, cold chain management, datacenter asset management, building access control, smart metering.
Savi Technology is a founding member of the DASH7 Alliance, a coalition of organizations from around the world committed to advancing the use and adoption of wireless sensor technologies based on the ISO 18000-7 standard for active Radio Frequency Identification.
