SmartWay Partner C.R. England Takes Initiative to Provide Quality Efficient Refrigerated Delivery, in Business Review USA

England's Corporate Vice President Mitch England discusses how the company's long-standing dedication to innovation led to the decision to embrace the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution from the transportation supply chain industry.

When I worked in C.R. England's fuel department, the company was already involved to an extent but wanted to get more involved and be recognized as a leader. We made an effort to tell our story to SmartWay and make them aware of the things we were already doing, explains England.

The company's controlled testing of aerodynamics and other components, implemented when fuel prices soared to an all-time high in 2008.

We launched an initiative to squeeze out fuel anywhere we could in the system. Smart Way bounced ideas off us and we wanted to leverage their platform to market ourselves better. It's been a great partnership, says England, chosen by SmartWay as one of six individual SmartWay Champions for 2011, an accolade he says reflects the company's long-term commitment to sustainability.

Efficiency measures adopted on trucks and temperature-controlled refrigerated units have been so successful that the company saved more than 10 million gallons of fuel between 2008 and 2010.
