Swedish apartment blocks are produced with "Green Logistics" from DB Schenker
Schenker Deutschland AG supplies prefabricated concrete walls just in time to major building sites in Scandinavia . 80 percent lower carbon emissions than pure truck transports
(Frankfurt am Main/Neubrandenburg, June 8, 2010) From now until spring 2011, DB Schenker will transport approx. 12,500 tons of prefabricated concrete walls from Neubrandenburg to Sweden for the construction of apartment blocks, arriving just in time. On June 8, the experts at the Central Rail Logistics and Forwarding department (RLF) of Schenker Deutschland AG carried the first eight of a total of more than 400 special containers by rail to Scandinavia. In the first stage of the project up to the end of July, the logistics specialists will supply these concrete elements to the construction site for 70 modern apartments in Västeras, 80 kilometers west of Stockholm, for Praefa GmbH, a company which specializes in expanded clay wall elements. As from August and October 2010, further large-scale projects handled by the housing and construction company ByggVesta AB will follow in Malmö and Stockholm.
This is an excellent example of how the unique DB Schenker network can be used to combine road and rail transport, claimed Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Member of the DB Mobility Logistics AG Management Board responsible for Transportation and Logistics. With environment friendly rail transports by DB Schenker Rail and a short on-carriage by truck, the logistics specialists have systematically opted for Green Logistics to supply the Swedish construction sites. We have implemented not only the most cost effective solution for the customer, but above all the most ecological just-in-time supply concept for these large-scale projects, stressed Dr. Hansjörg Rodi, Chairman of the Management Board of Schenker Deutschland AG. Compared with pure truck transports, we save more than 80 percent of carbon emissions on the Neubrandenburg-Västeras route alone, To achieve that target, Praefa invested around EUR 75,000 to upgrade its own transport equipment. Following the conversion of 30 flat-rack containers, the freight can now be loaded quickly at any container terminal using special reach stackers.
As part of this precisely scheduled supply concept for the ultra-modern Swedish apartment blocks, Schenker Deutschland AG also offers its customers comprehensive management of the entire transport chain from one single source. The logistics experts ensure punctual provision of the empty freight cars, collect the loaded containers from the siding at the Praefa plant in Neubrandenburg and take them by freight train and ferry to the intermodal terminal in Västeras, Sweden, exactly on schedule. DB Schenker also takes care of the on-carriage from the container terminal right up to the construction site. Two trailers are deployed specially for that purpose in Scandinavia.
At the intermodal terminal, the containers are transferred to the trailers and delivered to the construction site.
Climate protection at DB Schenker begins long before the actual transport, i.e. when advising the customer and planning new projects. On request, the environmental experts at DB Schenker can provide detailed carbon footprint statements, advise the customer on carbon reduction measures and thus provide the basis for optimization of the transport chains. This is possible thanks to its full-coverage international network, which combines the individual strengths of the different transport modes. Business enterprises can design the execution of their freight transports not only to satisfy economic requirements, but also on the basis of ecological criteria.
