Thermo King Delivers Peace of Mind with CARB Compliant Genset Platform

Brussels, Belgium, March 21, 2014 – At the beginning of 2014 the new regulations from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) took effect. The CARB requirements were introduced as a measure to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel engines in off-road applications. As a result, all reefer containers in California should be tested and registered with CARB before transport to California.

Customers of Thermo King, a manufacturer of temperature control systems for a variety of mobile applications and a brand ofIngersoll Rand, can have peace of mind when using Thermo King SG-4000 generator set (genset) units. Thermo King introduced its latest and its most advanced genset platform to-date, which also exceeds the U.S. CARB requirements, as well as the most stringent requirements of the EPA Tier IV final regulations.

“Hundreds of SG-4000 units are being commissioned or are already in service throughout the world, a clear signal of the adoption of this new compliance solution by the industry,” said Gulsah Metinoz, product manager for Thermo King Global Marine. “The SG-4000 genset series is evergreen CARB compliant, requiring no additional emission system. This new generation genset isn’t a patchwork solution requiring annual conditional CARB approval. From day one, the SG-4000 meets CARB requirements, without compromise.”

Delivering best-in-class performance and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the unit features an innovative diesel engine with electronic fuel injection and a reliable generator to achieve higher levels of efficiency. Additionally, an Engine Control Unit (ECU) supports advanced electronic engine control and monitoring to optimize horsepower, torque and response to changes in load.

The engine’s emission technologies eliminate the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

A DPF engine emissions system is generally not as fuel efficient and adds maintenance costs as compared to the latest genset platform. In addition, at this time, a DPF is only conditionally approved for one year by CARB and needs to be installed on units with less than 3000 hours of operation.

By eliminating the need for a DPF, the SG-4000 provides Thermo King customers with a lower cost of ownership, CARB compliance from day one and less downtime as no additional maintenance or inspections of the DPF are required.
