Volvo Trucks Continues Sponsorship of America’s Road Team for 2010

Volvo Trucks North America will continue as the sole sponsor of America’s Road Team in 2010. A premier trucking industry safety outreach program, America’s Road Team uses professional drivers with outstanding driving records to deliver messages about highway safety and the essentiality of trucking. The continuation of Volvo’s sponsorship was announced today at the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) annual meeting in Las Vegas.

“We view America’s Road Team as one of the most important proactive safety efforts in existence today,” said Scott Kress, Volvo Trucks senior vice president – sales & marketing. “The members of the Road Team demonstrate by personal example the trucking industry’s unwavering commitment to highway safety, a commitment which mirrors Volvo’s own core value of safety. Volvo Trucks is proud to continue as the sole sponsor of this outstanding program.”

America’s Road Team is a program founded and run by ATA. The members of the team are known as Captains, many of whom may have millions of miles of accident-free driving in their careers. They undergo a rigorous selection process to become part of the Road Team.

The Captains are frequently referred to as ambassadors for the U.S. trucking industry. Each year, they speak to hundreds of groups of lawmakers, government officials, students, regulators and other truck drivers. Their presentations include safe driving tips and highway safety information, much based upon their own experiences, as well as the importance of trucking to the American economy. The Captains frequently use a Volvo VN tractor, donated by Volvo Trucks, to pull a trailer extensively outfitted as a mobile presentation facility, allowing them to more effectively deliver their messages wherever they go.

Volvo Trucks North America’s operations and products are guided by the company’s three core values: Safety, Quality and Environmental Care. The Volvo VN and VHD trucks are assembled in the United States at the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia, while Volvo engines for North America are assembled in Hagerstown, Maryland. Both plants are certified to ISO14001 environmental and ISO9001 quality standards.

Volvo Trucks North America is part of the Volvo Group, one of the world's leading manufacturers of trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and services, and one of the world's leading producers of heavy-diesel engines (9-16 liter). The Group also provides complete solutions for financing and service. The Volvo Group, which employs about 100,000 people, has production facilities in 19 countries and sells their products in more than 180 markets.
